WHAT TO EXPECT DURING YOUR EMG/NERVE CONDUCTION STUDY

An EMG and nerve conduction study helps evaluate how well your nerves and muscles are working. It is commonly used to investigate symptoms such as numbness, tingling, weakness, radiating pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, pinched nerves, and peripheral neuropathy.

NERVE CONDUCTION STUDIES (NCS)

Small electrical impulses are used to measure how quickly and effectively your nerves carry signals.

ELECTROMYOGRAPHY (EMG)

A very thin needle electrode is placed into selected muscles to evaluate their electrical activity.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE?

Most appointments take approximately 30–60 minutes, depending on the areas being tested.

You may experience brief discomfort during portions of the examination, but most patients tolerate the testing well.

HOW TO PREPARE FOR YOUR APPOINTMENT

A little preparation helps make your testing experience easier.

BEFORE YOU ARRIVE

  • Shower or bathe normally.

  • Do not apply lotions, oils, creams, or moisturizers to the arms or legs being tested.

  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the testing area.

  • Continue taking your regular medications unless your physician has instructed otherwise.

  • Notify our team if you take blood-thinning medication, have a bleeding disorder, have a pacemaker or implanted electrical device, or have other medical concerns.

WHAT TO BRING

  • Photo ID

  • Insurance information

  • Physician referral or order, if applicable

  • Relevant imaging results or previous EMG reports, if available

  • Current medication list

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

Most patients can return to their normal activities immediately after testing.

You may experience mild, temporary soreness or bruising where the needle examination was performed.

Your study will be interpreted, and a detailed report will be sent to your referring healthcare provider to help guide the next steps in your care.
