WHEN THE SYMPTOMS AREN’T CLEAR, THE TESTING SHOULD BE.

EMG/NCS testing evaluates how nerves and muscles are functioning and can provide important diagnostic information that complements your clinical exam, imaging, and medical history.

01

Location

Where is the nerve problem originating?

02

Severity

How significant is the nerve injury or dysfunction?

03

Acuity

Is the process acute, chronic, or ongoing?

04

Recovery

Is there evidence of nerve recovery or reinnervation?

What is EMG/NCS testing?

Two tests that evaluate nerve and muscle function.

ELECTROMYOGRAPHY (EMG)

Electromyography records electrical activity in selected muscles using a small needle electrode. It helps evaluate whether symptoms may be related to a nerve or muscle problem.

NERVE CONDUCTION STUDIES (NCS)

Nerve conduction studies use electrodes on the skin and brief electrical pulses to measure how signals travel through selected nerves.

The tests are often performed together. Testing is guided by the patient’s symptoms and the referring provider’s clinical question.

COMMON SYMPTOMS

COULD YOUR SYMPTOMS BE NERVE-RELATED?

EMG/NCS testing may be considered when symptoms persist, recur, or don’t fully match what is seen on imaging.
